How much fun can a cartoon be? Well, a lot of fun. Lilo And Stitch is another VERY cool Disney animated feature. I have much enjoyed Disney's latest crop of movies such as "Atlantis" and "The Emperor's New Groove". It's been witty, funny, all and all, very entertaining.

Lilo And Stitch breaks new grounds in terms of character design and animation. The backgrounds are fantastic, with great detailing and coloring. Several scenes (the surfing excursion and the finale battle in particular) make great use of cool editing techniques and camera movements. I particularely like the recuring trick of having the camera go above and below the water surface during the many water-themed scenes. The overall feel of the movie is very stylized. A little featurette on the DVD mentions the particular attention to drawing everything on the screen with curves and rounded edges rather than straight lines and angles. The resulting effect is quite effective is giving a definite unique look to the movie. Stitch, aka Experiment 626, is an absolute cutie, mixing a whole series of emotions with great convincing. It is, i think, one of the better created Disney character in quite a while. It's simply cool and you won't believe what this little creature is capable of.

From a writing point of view, it is also a lot of fun. It treats kids with more mature themes, such as death in the family, being orphaned, caring for one another, and features a little girl, Lilo, in love with Elvis Presley. The writers have made great use of the relationship between the strong, opiniated, but lonely girl, and the absolutely short tempered, meanie with a hidden heart that is Stitch. For the most part of the movie, Lilo thinks Stitch is just a weird dog. The scene where she tries to teach him how to fetch, or the scene where she tries to teach it to be more like Elvis, are priceless. The story is also rich in many other ways. You have family moments, fun kids moments, fun space aliens, spaceships and battles including an impressive finale, a CIA agent who used to work in Roswell reconverted into a social worker (voiced by Ving Rhames).

I loved Lilo And Stitch. It's new in many ways, and sure to please the entire family. It's sharp, very cool looking, and fun. It's a definite treat i haven't minded watching 4 times in the space of a few weeks with my 3 year old son.
