ldh's review

I really like movies that display what i call "cultural displacement", that is, the superposition of multiple cultures and settings that are somewhat familiar, yet different. Such was the case for me with this film. I am familiar with middle-eastern culture, but not so much Iraqi. I am familiar with Australian culture, but it's still different enough from Canada, UK or America. Here, we see the life of a small Iraqi community in Melbourne, supposedly immigrated there after the first Iraq war, with second-generation kids about to enter College. It's a charming film, with charming characters, and a view of Muslims that is completely different from the run of the mill storylines you tend to see otherwise. In that respect, this film is a little gem that portrays a Muslim family in pretty much the same rom-com constructions of let' say, My Big Fat Greek Wedding.
