ldh's review

I feel this film perfectly represents the canonical French film esthetics. It's cinema-verite, with at times gorgeous visuals that take you by surprise, and a style of acting and editing that truly brings life to this very interesting story. It deserved the Grand Prix at Canned'17 and all the Cesars. People who disliked it because of a couple explicit homo-erotic scenes (maybe < 5mn in a film over 140mn long) must be really insecure enough to not appreciate the overall package. I just wish the film had been tighter, and managed the macro vs micro in its story telling better. Balancing the immense social context in France at that time with the more personal story of key individuals is challenging.
