ldh's review I love John Cassavetes. Every single one of his films, whether he directed them or starred in them, has made an impression on me, even the lesser ones. This one, of course, is one of his best! An incredibly broad and intimate look at a couple and their struggles to make their marriage work. Peter Falk and Gena Rowlands are marvelous beyond words. The cinematography is expertly devised, posing the camera in various places people in the room would occupy, with a mix of closeups and semi-obstructed views, sharply focused or eerily fuzzy at times. This of course is trademark Cassavetes and lends a personal and intimate feel throughout the film. At 2h30mn, the film surprisingly feels compact and dense, highlighting once again how deeply Cassavetes and his stars are able to pull you in their story. - Laurent Hasson |
