| What a surprising weekend. One movie was given a DOA status by the critics and industry analyst but managed to almost win the crown this weekend. Hoodwinked! The True Story of Red Riding Hood (2005) finished third sure, but within about $1M of the first place with $12.4M which is about twice what most people had predicted. The movie is getting decent reviews from the audience, and we'll have to see if it gets good legs. This is a digital animation done on a shoestring (about $15M production budget compared to the $100M on average for the latest hits we have had). If this movie really works (let's say it makes $40-50M), you may see more low-budget indie digital animation films in your theaters.
The first film this weekend is Glory Road (2006). It has become an almost given that if you release an inspirational coach story on Martin Luther King Jr day, you'll make good bucks. This year was no exception. With $13.6M, the movie did not do as well as people had expected, but it was a reasonable show.
Second this weekend was Last Holiday (2006). With $12.8M, it beat expectations, but just narowly. The reviews are mixed, and the movie cost $45M to make. so let's see how it goes.
In other news, Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe, The (2005) easily crossed teh $250M bar this week and with an additional $10.1M this weekend, it now sits at $261.3M. The question now is whether it will surpass Harry Potter 4, The Goblet Of Fire (2005) or not. King Kong (2005) passed the $200M bar so it met its production budget. As people say in the business, it's a great disappointment, but no one should lose their job over this. The movie should pass the $500M mark worldwide in the next few weeks, and will make a small profit before it reached the home video market. Finally, Hostel (2005) has almost a 50% drop off from its opening weekend, but with an additional $10M, and $35M total, the film is making a nice profit.
