When A Stranger Calls (2006) was a surprise this weekend. With terrible reviews, and a tired genre, the movie managed to make $21.6M and finish first. This is the best opening for a movie during a Superbowl weekend. The movie cost $15M to produce, so the studios should see some profit unless the movie completely collapses.

Big Momma's House 2 (2006) also surprised again, and with an additional $13.6M, it now sits at $45.7M. The movie has already beaten pretty much all expectations.

Nanny McPhee (2005) added almost $10M and now totals $26.5M. Brokeback Mountain (2005) was somewhat disappointing with only $6M. The movie just crossed the $60M mark, which is rather fantastic though. If it wins some good Oscars, and with some promotional push from the studios, its chances of reaching $100M are not completely off.

Hoodwinked! The True Story of Red Riding Hood (2006) continues its little walk in the woods and should cross $50M over teh next two weeks. Not bad for an independent digital animation that cost $15M to produce. Underworld 2: Evolution (2006) is running out of breath, as expected, and only managed $5.3M in its third weekend. The movie has crossed $50M though and has done better than expected overall. Finally, Something New (2006) opened this weekend with a whisperish $4.9M. Its prospects for improvements don't look good.
