2006.02.14 - BoxOffice News

Don't you love the movie business? I especially like it when analysts and specialists do their work and come up with predictions that end up not quite matching what reality has served. This is another such weekend. Everybody was considering Pink Panther, The (2006) to be a major flop to match its dire reviews. For a movie that cost $80M to make, and close to half that to market, a $20.2M opening is certainly not a reason to cry victory, but it is far from being a severe defeat either. If the movie shows decent legs, it might be able to recoup its costs in the home video market.

Final Destination 3 (2006) was widely expected to win the weekend, but it finished second. With $19.2M though, the movie is already a success, having opened with more than its two sequels. The question is whether the movie will cross the $50M and warrant a fourth installment.

Curious George (2006) also surprised everybody. With $14.7M, the classic animation (as in "not digital") did a lot better than people had thought, attracting lots of families with young children.

The big loser of the weekend has got to be Firewall (2006), which did just $13.6M in its opening weekend. Looks like Harrison Ford is still in the penalty box with the audience.
