2006.03.23 - BoxOffice News

This past weekend was boring to say the least. All the new movies performed poorly compared to expectations and only two holdovers managed to surprise with drops from last weekend that were much lower than expected.

V For Vendetta (2005) won as ecpected by a wide margin, but not with numbers as high as expected. Many analysts had the film come in with $30M or more. Instead, it opened with $25.6M. With pretty darn good reviews overall and what seems like a good word of mouth, the movie could be the first to break $100M this year. We'll have to wait next weekend to see if it has a chance of happening.

Failure To Launch (2006) continues to impress and made $15.6M in its second weekend. It's a small drop compared to its opening weekend of $24.4M and the movie now sits at $48.3M which is quite a lot considering the film had terrible reviews. If this continues, it may become the first film this year to cross $100M!

Shaggy Dog, The (2006) fared even better and continues to confound critics who gave it a terrible grade. With an additional $13.4M this weekend, the film only dropped about 20% from its opening weekend. It's phenomenal. However, the film opened low to start with, and has now cashed in just about $35M, which is well below expectations.

Finally, one big bad surprise was of course Find Me Guilty (2006) which managed to make only $608K!!! That was with 439 theaters as the film had a limited release in a few cities only. That's less than $1,500 per theater on average for the entire 3-day weekend. $500 a day. 50-75 people per theater per day. The numbers are really bad. Now, Sidney Lumet is a respected director, and this movie features Vin Diesel in a very different role from what he has done in the past. The reviews are not great, but they are not bad either, so it looks like very poor marketting is to blame.
