2006.05.03 - BoxOffice News

The movie itself was without any surprise, so it is only befitted that it also won, without much of a surprise this weekend's race. R.V. (2006) finished first with $16.4M in spite of terrible reviews. That was lower than expectations, and unless we get any surprise, the movie won't cross the $50M mark.

United 93 (2006) however got amazing reviews, and the word of mouth is very strong. It opened with $11.5M, which was in line with most predictions. It's too early to tell whether the movie is a sleeping hit, or re-opens wounds that are still fresh for most people and as a result, gather limited appeal.

In other news, Silent Hill (2006) did not crash this weekend and added $9.3M to its bank account. the movie is now sitting on $34.3M and may still have a chance to cross the $50M bar. Scary Movie 4 (2006) however is struggling, and in spite of its amazing $40M+ opening, it is having the hardest of time to move much beyond. In its 3rd weekend, the film only managed $7.8M and is approaching $80M. It looks more and more likely that it will be the first film ever to open with over $40M, yet not reach $100M. Finally, Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (2006) is closing fast on the $180M mark and may still make $200M, but not without difficulty.
