| Superman Returns (2006) was not so super in the end. It made $52.5M over the 3-day weekend, and $32M before that on Thursday andWednesday when it opened. In total, during its first week (Wednesday through Tuesday) and a very long 4-day 4th ofJuly weekend, the film pulled in $108M. The numbers are good, but not those of a monster hit the studios had expected. The film did cost almost $260M just to produce (the most expensive film ever) plus a lot of promotion. The film is pretty much assured to break $200M and since itseems to be doing well internationally, it will show a profit eventually. It's just not the runaway hit most people had expected.
The real surprise last weekend was Devil Wears Prada, The (2006) which stole quite a lot of thunder from the number one film. With $27.5M, the film did significantly better than was expected and has a chance of becoming a mid-level hit of the summer. With a production far smaller than Superman Returns (2006), this film will show a healthier profit as it looks like it should reach $100M.
Finally,Click (2006) added almost $20M over the weekend and is on its way to pass the $100M milestone. Cars (2006) also did fairly welland added another $14.6M to its tally, bringing it closer and closer to $200M.
