Woah! Holly Macaroni! Records have fallen this weekend, and massively at that. Pirates Of The Caribbean 2, Dead Man's Chest (2006) beat all the high expectations that were layered on it and helped break a number of records:
- Best opening day ever when it opened on Friday with $55.8M. Star Wars 6, Episode 3, Revenge Of The Sith (2005) held the record before with $50M.
- Best weekend opening ever with $135.6M. Spiderman 1 (2002) previously held the record with $115M.
- Fastest to $100M in 2 days only. The previous record was held by Matrix 2, Reloaded, The (2003), Harry Potter 4, The Goblet Of Fire (2005), Spiderman 1 (2002), Star Wars 6, Episode 3, Revenge Of The Sith (2005), X 3, The Last Stand (2006) which each did it in 3 days.
These are a lot of records which have fallen by a fairly large margin, and there will be others surely, including fastest to $200M, fastest to $300M, and of course, fastest to $400M. This film really has the opportunity to get there and be a worldwide Billion dollar smash hit. The reviews seem good, and so the movie should really be a mega hit. That success also helped the weekend itself of course. With a total box office of about $220M, this weekend beat all previous weekends in history, the previous record having been in June 2004 with $188M when Harry Potter 3, The Prisoner Of Azkaban (2004) came out.
Superman Returns (2006) however is not doing so well at all. Mixed reviews and poor legs have caused the film to only register $21.8M in its second weekend. That's a sharp drop and although the movie has already made $141.6M at the box office, one has to remember it cost nearly $300M to bring to market (production and marketting budgets combined). The film is pretty much assured to reach $200M, but it won't really get any further. Devil Wears Prada, The (2006) however continues to do rather well and added $15M to now top $63.1M. The movie is a mid level hit. Finally, Click (2006) broke the $100M bar, and Cars (2006) broke the $200M mark. This weekend was a truly a landmark weekend the kind of which we haven't seen in quite a while.
