2006.08.03 - BoxOffice News

Miami Vice (2006) became the new number one movie at the box office this weekend with $25.7M. It's not bad, but the movie was actually expensive to make with a budget estimated between $125M and $150M. With average reviews, the movie may remain just Michael Mann's best opening ever, but not manage to become is best success which until now is Collateral (2004).

Pirates Of The Caribbean 2, Dead Man's Chest (2006) may be slowing down but it still pocketed $20.6M which brings its incredible total at $358.5M. The movie is in good shape to beat the record for fastest to $400M.

In other news, John Tucker Must Die (2006) opened with $14.3M, which is not bad. But its targeted audience means it may not get very far. Monster House (2006) and Ant Bully, The (2006) are both showing that doing digital animations is not a sure fire success. The market is crowded and the films are definitely performing below expectations. Lady In The Water (2006) is another disappointment. With $7.1M, the movie now sits at $32.2M and has become director M. Night Shyamalan's first bomb. Devil Wears Prada, The (2006) however easily passed the $100M mark over the week and now sits at $106.6M. That film is definitely a surprise success.
