Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby (2006) pretty much surprised everyone, not because it won the weekend, which was a foregone conclusion, but by how much it exceeded all expectations with a $47M opening. After a string of misses after his first big success Elf (2003) , Will Ferrell is back on top. The movie is pretty much assured $100M and the question now of course is how much more it can make.

Barnyard: The Original Party Animals (2006) also surprised analysts with $15.8M which was slightly ahead of expectations. The market is rather saturated at this point with digital animations and we'll have to wait till next week to see how this one will fare.

Pirates Of The Caribbean 2, Dead Man's Chest (2006) continues its unstoppable run and added $11M in its fifth weekend and is a hair below $380M now. Miami Vice (2006), as expected based on reviews and word of mouth fell apart on its second weekend and barely managed $10.2M. The movie now sits at $46.3M and will have a hard time breaking $100M. Finally, the British sensation First Descent (2005) had a disappointing opening with $8.9M. Maybe it's because the studios decided to butcher the movie for the US audience by significantly changing the original ending that Europeans got. I guess many people will simply wait for the unrated original British cut when it comes out on DVD.
