This was one of the worst weekend in a while where the top movie did not even gross $10M, and the top 20 films made about $65M combined. This one weekend completely reversed the trend of the summer which was very encouraging for the industry. Let's hope this is just a statistical anomaly.
Covenant, The (2006) topped the box office this weekend with $8.9M. The reviews are bad, and it seems that beyond the pretty boys and a few cool special effects, the movie doesn't have much else to offer. Hollywoodland (2006) however is getting much much better reviews overall, but in the end, still only managed $5.9M. On the other hand, it did open in only 1,548 theaters, so it may yet expand. In any case, the Oscar buzz has started.
Invincible (2006) continues to do well with $5.6M and should pass the $50M mark next weekend. Crank (2006) is also managing OK and added $4.9M, putting it at $20M. The film will pass $30M eventually, which is not a lot, but enough to be considered a mini hit. Finally, amidst wonderful reviews and good word of mouth, Illusionist, The (2006) has expanded and made $4.5M. It now sits at $28M, and the Oscar buzz is going on for this one too.
