2006.12.20 - BoxOffice News

This past weekend, everybody was talking about Pursuit Of Happyness, The (2006). With $26.5M. it took first place and managed to pull in quite a surprise as analysts didn't quite know what to make of a drama starring Will Smith. But, the guy has real box office power and seems to have proven with this film that he can play a lot more than action heroes. This was also the 13th time a Sony movie took the top spot this year, a record for the Studio.

Eragon (2006) however disappointed slightly with $23.2M. The film was the odds on favorite to win the weekend, and many people expected it to make a lot more. Now, given the demographics targeted by the film, it has yet to benefit from the holidays and all those teens who are going to be out of school, so we'll only know if the film is a hit next weekend.

Charlotte'S Web (2006) is another movie that missed expectations. Targetted at a much younger demographics though, kids who want to see this will need some adult accompaniment. Happy Feet (2006) continues to do well and should break the $150M mark over the week. Finally, Apocalypto (2006) somewhat collapsed on its second weekend. With $8M, the movie now sits on $28.2M and chances of a $100M tally is pretty much out at this point.
