In spite of fairly bad reviews, especially for an M. Night Shyamalan movie, The Village beat most expectations and banked a very good $50.7M this weekend. Unfortunately, because of the bad reviews, this movie is expected to have much poorer legs than previous movies from Mr. Shyamalan. Bourne Supremacy came close to crossing the $100M this weekend. It continues to do well at the box office, and still has fairly good reviews. The movie is expected to easily beat the original in ticket sales. The Manchurian Candidate is the other big opening this weekend, with very good reviews, and managed $20M. Denzel Washington movies typically have long legs, so Paramount will most liekly see a profit here. I, Robot managed a paltry $10M, meaning that it will not match its production budget in its domestic theatrical release. Fox will have to show good international and home video results in order to show a profit. This is somewhat of a disappointment given that the movie features Wil Smith. Finally, one of the biggest disappointment of the decade has got to be Thunderbirds. A large $70M budget amounted to an opening weekend of a paltry $1.8M!!! You do the math. Along wityh awful reviews, don't expect this movie to last more than a week or 2 in the theaters.
